Heroin Overdose Deaths Spike in Poconos

The heroin crisis in America is now at our backdoors in northeast Pennsylvania.  Monroe County, comprised of the Poconos, released some statistics about heroin’s deadly effect.  So far this year there have been 15 overdose deaths with 14 pending toxicology tests of which narcotics are believed to be the culprit.  This is all in one county in our state and it triples the number from just one year ago.

Monroe County coroner, Bob Allen, warns that the trend of heroin overdoses is “just starting for us”.  Like many other cities and towns, Monroe County equates the spike in deaths to fentanyl-laced heroin.  Fentanyl, also of the opiate class, has been estimated at being approximately 200 times more powerful than morphine.

Many people ask, “Where is it all coming from?”  Detective Kim Lippincott of the Monroe County district attorney’s office says the majority of these drugs are coming from Paterson, New Jersey.  Dealers are using Interstate 80 and 380 to distribute the drugs in all of Pennsylvania’s northeast counties.
